If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone,
you can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.
A hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles,
you can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

Lord I'm one, Lord I'm two, Lord I'm three, Lord I'm four,
Lord I'm 500 miles from my home.
500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles,
Lord I'm 500 miles from my home.

Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name.
Lord I can't go a-home this a-way.
This a-away, this a-way, this a-way, this a-way,
Lord I can't go a-home this a-way.

If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone,
you can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

"500 Miles"
Written by Hedy West

It's been quite some time since i was last recalled by an English song.

It is not easy to trace Western songs back because singers love to reperform good old songs, and this is especially true for folk songs ('coz they are less commercial?). It took me a few web searches to find out this piece of information: "500 Miles" was originally recorded by The Journeymen in 1961, but popularized by Peter, Paul & Mary.
When a song has been recorded so many times by so many singers, the lyrics get varied inevitably. It's nice to retrieve the version i listened to, but, if not possible, i have to learn how to let go.

Wise men say only fools rush in
But I can't help falling in love with you
Shall I stay
Would it be a sin
If I can't help falling in love with you

Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you

For I can't help falling in love with you

Elvis Presley "Can't Help Falling In Love"
Words and Music: George Weiss, Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore
For the film Blue Hawaii (1961)

Was having lunch with Sis last Sunday. Can't remember how we came to this topic but somehow we talked about the golden oldies. I told her, as i sometimes tell others, that i can't remember the singers, the song titles, the actors and the movie titles for all productions done in English. It's all "non-rememberable" to me. So, i kept on throwing bits and pieces of songs and singers to her and she helped work them out.

I mentioned ONJ, and she resolved it to Olivia Newton-John. I hummed a few lines, and she agreed that's "It Might Be You". She talked about Anne Murray's "You Needed Me" while i recalled "Eternal Flames" by Eagles -- ah, should be the Bangles. And, well, i can't remember (again!) who or what else we mentioned, except Elvis Presley. But the song i attributed to him last Sunday was possibly not his; i said "I Am Sailing". In fact, what i had in mind should be "Can't Help Falling In Love".

How do people describe Presley's voice? Sexy? 磁性 may be a good term 'coz i feel being attracted to his voice. Some singers may sing better or have nicer voices, giving the audience great enjoyment of their singing, but Presley's makes a tender yet palpitating touch on those who listen. Oh well, here i am referring to his soft ballads only, not his rock 'n rolls.

What a shame that i am not fond of the rock 'n roll songs of the King of Rock and Roll!

  • Sway

When marimba rhythms start to play, dance with me, make me sway;
Like a lazy ocean hugs the shore, hold me close, sway me more.

Like a flower bending in the breeze, bend with me, sway with ease;
When we dance you have a way with me -- stay with me, sway with me.

Other dancers may be on the floor, dear, but my eyes will see only you;
Only you have the magic technique -- when we sway I go weak.

I can hear the sounds of violins long before it begins
Make me thrill as only you know how -- sway me smooth, sway me now.

You know how, sway me smooth, sway me now.

"Sway"
Music by Pablo Beltran Ruiz
Word (English) by Norman Gimbel

I listened to this song just once. I was listening to a radio programme, when this song was played together with the Cantonese version by Aaron Kwok. I have to say the English version is far better -- not the arrangement, not the lyrics, maybe the singer, but here i paricularly mean the mood and the feeling i get.

A ray of hope flickers in the sky
A tiny star lights up way up high
All across the land dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass when a child is born

A silent wish sails the seven seas
The winds of change whisper in the trees
And the walls of doubt crumble tossed and torn
This comes to pass when a child is born

A rosy hue settles all around
You got the feel you're on solid ground
For a spell or two no one seems forlorn
This comes to pass when a child is born

(Spoken)
And all of this happens,
 because the world is waiting,
 waiting for one child;
Black, white, yellow,
 no one knows;
But a child that will grow up and turn tears to laughter,
 hate to love, war to peace and everyone to everyone's neighbor;
and misery and suffering will be words to be forgotten forever.

It's all a dream and illusion now
It must come true sometime soon somehow
All across the land dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass when a child is born

You'll find the enchanted neighborhood
Of Christopher's childhood days

And Kanga and little Roo
There's Rabbit and Piglet and there's Owl

Sleep, lay me down,
and hold me closely in your arms and I will close my eyes.
Please promise me
That when I wake up from my dreams, you'll be there by my side.

Love, if you say you won't slip away
Then I can go dreaming of forever more.

But I won't rest
Until I know that you'll be here, in the morning by my side.

Dan Seals and Rafe van Hoy "Lullaby"

  也是區瑞強,因為他用了這首歌作《2000 靚歌再重聚》的晚安歌……有時候,他會唱中文版

When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall,
We used to love while others used to play.
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by,
Someone else moved in from far away.

Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small,
And you don't ask the time of day.
But you and I, our love will never die,
But guess we'll cry come first of may.

The apple tree that grew for you and me,
I watched the apples falling one by one.
And I recall the moment of them all,
The day I kissed your cheek and you were mine.

When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall,
Do do do do do do do do do...
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by,
Someone else moved in from far away.

"First Of May"
The Bee Gees
For the film Melody (1971)

It was in the HK Int'l Bookfair, a few years ago. And i bought a collection of 5 CDs just for this song, even though i didn't know most of the rest.

I haven't watched the movie (中譯:《兩小無猜》)myself, but it seems that most people of that generaton (!) would know about it. I suspect they know it just because of the music and the songs...

As far as i know, there are two Cantonese versions: one by Leon Lai, and the other by Tony Leung. Yes, Tony Leung Chiu Wai.

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high,
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue.
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
Away above the chimney tops.
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow,
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow,
Why then - oh, why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow,
Why, oh, why can't I?

Judy Garland "Over The Rainbow"
Music: Harold Arlen
Words: Edgar Yipsel "Yip" Harburg
For the film The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Academy Award - Music (Song)

Almost 70 years have passed. So, has anyone found out what really lies beyond the rainbow?

Moon river, wider than a mile
I'm crossing you in style some day
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way

Two drifters, off to see the world
There's such a lot of world to see
We're after the same rainbow's end, waitin' 'round the bend
My huckleberry friend, Moon River, and me

(Moon river, wider than a mile)
(I'm crossin' you in style some day)
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way

Two drifters, off to see the world
There's such a lot of world to see
We're after that same rainbow's end, waitin' 'round the bend

Music: Henry Mancini
Words: Johnny Mercer

Don't know who sang the version i once listened to. It was so nice...

I remember the day we had nothin' to do
So we went down to the City Zoo
Just to kill an hour or two
Out in the good sunshine

But we had so much fun, we were glad that we came
We fed all the animals and gave each a name
Didn't even mind when it started to rain
We had a real good time

But now that it's over and you're far away
I miss you more with each passing day
And all my friends sympathise and say
"He'll forget in time
Yes you will, give yourself a little more time"

But it's already been well over a year
And just in case you're interested you might like to hear
How everybody's doing down at the City Zoo
Without you
Well the monkeys forgot ya and the hippo forgot ya
And so did the kangaroo
But me and the elephant, we still remember you
Me and the elephant, we'll never forget you

Well I wrote to Ann Landers and Dear Abby too
And sought their advice as to what I should do
And they said everything that reminds me of you
Would all have to go

So I burned all your pictures, except two or three
The one by my bed and the one on my TV
And the one that I always carry with me
Everywhere I go

Now today was so nice and since I was in town
I thought I'd take the opportunity to go down
And see how everyone is down at the City Zoo
And what's new
Well the rhino forgot ya and the zebra forgot ya
The polar bear and tiger too
But me and the elephant, we still remember you
Me and the elephant, we'll never forget you

Benny Whitehead "Me And The Elephant"

I knew the Chinese version first. They are surprisingly similar...

Perhaps love is like a resting place,
a shelter from the storm
It exists to give you comfort,
it is there to keep you warm.
And in those times of trouble
when you are most alone
The memory of love will bring you home.

Perhaps love is like a window,
perhaps an open door
It invites you to come closer,
it wants to show you more.
And even if you lose yourself
and don't know what to do
The memory of love will see you through.

Love to some is like a cloud,
to some as strong as steel
For some a way of living,
for some a way to feel.
And some say love is holding on
and some say letting go
And some say love is everything,
and some say they don't know.

Perhaps love is like the ocean,
full of conflict, full of pain
Like a fire when it's cold outside,
thunder when it rains.
If I should live forever,
and all my dreams come true
My memories of love will be of you.

John Denver "Perhaps Love"

I knew this song long before i heard of John Denver. This is really a lovely piece.

Love is hard, i suppose. No matter how long we've been in love, we may not know what love really is.
Babies may know more than we do.
