　　黃昱寧最近在《書城》提到 William Strunk, Jr. 1959 年初版的 The Elements of Style 曾在美國名列「世紀百部最佳非虛構作品」，而且掛名還在前頭。幾十年來此書一直是美國學界教授美式英文的一本「迷你聖經」。Strunk 認為：

A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentence, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short or that he avoid all detail and treat his subject only in outline, but that every word tell.

　　黃昱寧請來段學儉博士譯成中文：「蓋須句無冗字，章無冗句，譬似畫師無一筆之費，匠師無一器之贅。非謂為文設辭必欲苟簡，敘事力避舖陳，乃字字皆響耳。」

　　簡言之，廢話乃文章之大忌。
